Hi. I’m a CAR T cell: a type of cancer treatment.
I guide your white blood cells–aka T cells–to find and fight cancer.
I may be different from other treatments you’ve tried because I’m made from you.
I’m not a stem cell transplant or chemotherapy.
Think of me as a boosted version of your white blood cells, also known as T cells.
I help guide them to better target cancer cells.
Let me show you how I do it with a one-time treatment.
There’s an easy way to remember how I’m made: The 3 B’s.
First, your blood will be drawn, or borrowed, in a process called apheresis. That’s when some of your white blood cells–or T cells–are collected and the rest goes back to you.
Then, your white blood cells–aka T cells–are sent to a lab where they’re given a boost.
Special receptors called CARs are added to my surface. Think of them as little beacons that help me find your cancer cells.
Some of your own white blood cells are now CAR T cells, like me.
After I’m created, you’ll go to a certified treatment center. Here, you’ll get a low dose of chemotherapy for 3 days to prepare your body to receive CAR T.
Then, I’m put into your body as infusions of 2 different cell types.
These take less than 15 minutes to infuse, but times may vary.
Now it’s time to look for cancer cells. Thanks to my CAR, I can easily spot them.
When I find a cancer cell, I latch on and get to work.
Sometimes, I’ll also attach to some healthy cells in the process.
After I attach to the marker, I fight the cancer cell. That’s the Breyanzi benefit.
Your own immune cells now have enhanced cancer-targeting abilities.
So, when you hear about CAR T-cell therapy, just remember it’s me doing my part to help your body find and fight cancer.
